“I ran a total of 800km this year”

“The website received 50,000 hits this week”

“This bean contains 25% of its calories from protein”

These statements all give raw numbers, which, to a random audience are pretty meaningless.

Instead, statistics that give direction and a degree of the progress or change are much more meaningful:

“Last year I ran 200km, this year I quadrupled it ran more than 800km”

“This website started only a month ago and has grown to 50,000 hits this week”

“Steak contains 20% of its calories from protein, whilst beans contain 25%”

I think there’s a book out there that I would like read – something like “How to lie with statistics” – so I can learn more about this topic.
