Popped corn is a healthy snack, if you leave out the butter, salt and oil.

Corn is a  whole grain. Other whole  grains include: barley, brown rice, buckwheat, oats, millet, quinoa, rye, teff, whole-wheat pasta, wild rice.

Most popcorn sold at supermarkets, in ‘pop n serve’ paper bags, is high in butter, oil, salt.

A healthier option is to buy plain poppable corn, and then:

  • place corn into a microwave safe bowl (not too much)
  • put parchment or baking paper on top, secure with a rubber band
  • prick holes in the paper with a fork
  • microwave for 2-4 minutes, or until the time between pops is more than two seconds.

This is a delicious snack, and is also ‘whole-food plant based’ plus has zero oil or salt.
